Turtle Wax Trans Am Series title to be decided at Sandown

The title goes down to the wire in what will be the first appearance of the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series at the historic Sandown Raceway this weekend.

Just 19-points separate Garry Rogers Motorsport team-mates Nathan Herne and Owen Kelly at the squad’s home venue as the top seven in the standings remain a mathematical chance at the title.

Holding an impressive third in the title race, Brett Holdsworth driving the Breeze Holiday Park Ashley Seward Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro, still remains in contention albeit 66-points behind Kelly as 200 will be on offer at Sandown.

This is not to say Holdsworth won’t have a battle on his hands as just 31 points separate he and fourth placed Kyle Gurton in the Micale Cabinets/Nuveau Group, Dream Racing Australia-prepared Ford Mustang as lead rookie Jon McCorkindale is also in touch driving the Dial Before You Dig entry.

Another to impress during this season, Hugh McAllister sits seventh and remains a distant mathematical chance at the title.

Leading the local Victorian charge is Ben Grice in the All American Auto Parts and Driveline Ford Mustang after a mixed season, but a recent podium at Queensland Raceway bodes well for the second-generation driver.

Other Victorians to keep an eye on include Elliot Barbour completing his maiden season in the Pioneer DJ Chevrolet Camaro and Grice’s team-mate Nic Carroll in the Hogan Prestige Cars Dodge Challenger, with both hoping to turn around tough campaigns on home turf.

Young guns Nash Morris, Lochie Dalton, Cody Burcher and Edan Thornburrow joined by recent debutants Jack Sipp and Tom Hayman ensure a stacked grid to end the season.
